We were designated a task to film a music video for a song we had never heard of until this day. We were given the song 'Knock On Wood'. Unfortunately the day we saved our video the system at college was down and now we cannot find our video. However, I feel that the task was very useful as it helped me gain an insight into how a music video is really made. There are a lot of technical areas to cover, its not all glitz and glam. There's costume, lighting, locations and shot types that we have to think about. My role in the group was the camera woman, I used handheld most of the time as the beat was quite fast it looked weird if it was shot on just a tripod stand.
Once we had finished filming we went back into the editing suite to begin editing our video, only to realize we hadn't got enough shots. This made editing the video quite hard as we hadn't obtained enough varied shots to fill the whole 2 minutes of the song. Therefore, we improvised and used lots of stylized effects such as: wipes and washes in the video to make it look more interesting. We also found it quite difficult to get the lip syncing in time with the music and the person singing. I think that if we had spent more time planning it then we would have been able to get a decent video out of it. Also, when we were using the programme such as Photoshop for our Digi-pack I found that quite difficult to use, so hopefully this year I will improve in that area.
In doing this exercise, I feel that it taught me just how hard and time consuming filming a music video really is! Also that a base track is VERY important! As we didn't know the song it was hard for us to film one or two whole base tracks as she couldn't grasp the lyrics straight away but we got through it. Moreover, I think the experience made me realize that planning is ESSENTIAL otherwise you we wont have enough shots, location permission and so forth.. I'm quite excited to start filming for A2 and get to work with my new group!
